Altering your get dependent files preference in Dreamweaver 8

As a web developer I find myself regularly putting select files up to the server, and on big sites it can take a while to scan through all the files to do a site | synchronise sitewide.

I recently noticed that somewhere along the line I had told my installation of Dreamweaver to get dependent files when I performed a get operation on files moving from the remote server to my local hard drive.

If you have accidentally set your preference and told Dreamweaver not to ask you again then the simple way to change this preference is as follows.

The next time that you are performing the operation you want to change the preference (a get operation in my case) just

  1. select the file you want to transfer
  2. hold down the alt key (windows) or opt key (macintosh)
  3. press the get or put button

This will perform the normal get or put operation but will also pop up the dialog which has a check box for you to set your new preference.

Personally I like to only get the single file I have asked it to transfer - it takes a fraction of the time and I keep on top of file synchronisation when I edit each file. If it does get out of hand then the synchronise sitewide is always a few clicks away!

TIP: Dreamweaver appears to have seperate preferences for the GET and PUT so you can mix and match to your leisure.
